Furnace Blowing Cold Air

A blower moving unheated air pulls warmth out of the rooms it's supposed to be heating, so it's worth sorting out rather than riding through another night.

When this becomes an emergency

What a pro does

Cool air at the registers tells you the fan side works and the fire side doesn't. Where it gets interesting is why. A tech watches a full call for heat with the panel off, timing each stage, because the sequence itself names the failure: inducer spins but the pressure switch never proves, or it proves and the igniter never glows, or the flame lights and dies three seconds later at the sensor. That last one is the classic. A flame rod with a film of oxide on it stops passing enough current for the board to believe there's fire, and the board does exactly what it should by dropping the gas and letting the fan purge. Blocked flue draft counts too, and in tight older basements a water heater sharing an undersized chimney can steal enough draft to knock the furnace out on its safety. Forcing repeated retries just cooks the igniter.

Frequently asked questions

That's a designed response. The control board purges the heat exchanger after a failed or interrupted burn, and on a lockout it will keep circulating air even though it won't let the gas valve open again.
Yes. A blocked or shared flue, a drain line backed up at the condensate trap, or a return duct pulling from a cold crawl space can all end a burn cycle early even when the furnace itself is sound.
Often not. A lockout is the control refusing to keep trying, and the underlying trigger is frequently a dirty sensor, a clogged trap, or a marginal switch rather than a major component.
One reset to clear a lockout is reasonable, and if it fires and runs normally afterward that's useful information. Repeating it over and over just wears the ignition components without addressing the cause.
