Thermostat Not Working

A control that can't hold a call for heat leaves working equipment sitting idle, so a visit sorts out whether the fault is the thermostat or what it's wired to.

When this becomes an emergency

What a pro does

A thermostat is a switch and a sensor, so troubleshooting splits along those lines. On the switch side, a tech verifies the low-voltage supply, then jumpers the heat terminals at the equipment to see whether the system responds to a direct call. If it fires, the fault is upstream in the control or its wiring. If it doesn't, the thermostat was never the problem. Wiring is where older houses get interesting, because the cable running up from the basement is often decades old, stapled through joists, sometimes spliced somewhere nobody documented, and a conductor nicked during a remodel produces exactly this intermittent behavior. Smart thermostats add their own wrinkle when a system has no common wire and the unit tries to steal power through the heat circuit, which browns it out mid-cycle. Sensor problems are usually placement instead. Sitting on a cold outside wall, in a draft from an old window, or above a register all skew the reading badly.

Frequently asked questions

No. Dead batteries are the first thing to rule out, and beyond that a blown low-voltage fuse on the control board or a tripped safety switch upstream will leave the display dark with nothing wrong at the wall.
It's the conductor that supplies continuous low-voltage power. Older wiring runs frequently lack it, and a connected thermostat without steady power will reset or lose its schedule at unpredictable times.
Almost always location. Mounted on an exterior wall, near a drafty window, above a supply register, or in direct afternoon sun, the device measures its own microclimate rather than the room.
Only if the thermostat is genuinely at fault. Damaged low-voltage wiring between the wall and the equipment produces the same symptoms, and a new device changes nothing until that cable is checked.
