Furnace Making Loud Noise
A new noise from a burner or a blower is the equipment telling you something moved or wore through, so have it listened to before the part lets go.
When this becomes an emergency
- A deep whump or thud comes from the cabinet a second or two after the burner tries to light.
- Something metallic is scraping or ticking in rhythm with the fan.
- A high whine builds as the blower ramps and drops away when it stops.
- The noise carries up through the floor into the flat or bedroom above.
What a pro does
Sound is diagnostic if you know where to stand. A tech listens at the burner compartment, then the blower housing, then the ductwork, because the same rumble means three different things depending on where it's loudest. Delayed ignition produces that hollow thump: gas accumulates a moment too long before it catches, and the pressure pulse hits the exchanger every single cycle until somebody addresses the burner or the igniter. Scraping usually means a wheel has shifted on its shaft or a bearing has run dry. A whine is more often the motor itself. Duct noise is its own category, and in older houses with sheet metal run tight against joists and plaster, a boom on startup can simply be an oversized panel flexing under pressure. That one's cheap to solve. The distinction matters because two of these are safety questions and the rest are comfort.
