No Heat
A house with no heat in a damp cold snap starts putting pipes and comfort at risk within hours, so call and say when the system last ran.
When this becomes an emergency
- Nothing at all happens when the setpoint is raised well above room temperature.
- The equipment is silent and no indicator light shows anywhere on the cabinet.
- The house has been losing a degree or two an hour since the outage started.
- The unit fired this morning and has been dead since without any warning noise.
What a pro does
Nine times out of ten this starts at the electrical panel and the service switch, not at the equipment. Those switches sit at the head of the basement stairs in a lot of older homes, look exactly like a light switch, and get flipped by anyone carrying laundry past them. A tech confirms power, then the low-voltage side, then the thermostat's call, then the sequence the equipment runs when it receives one. Each stage either passes the call along or it doesn't, and finding the break is mostly a matter of working that chain in order rather than opening panels at random. Something else worth naming: a total outage often turns out to be a safety device that did its job. Blocked venting, an overheated limit, a flooded condensate trap. Replacing whatever tripped without asking why it tripped just sets up the next outage. Verifying carbon monoxide alarms have working batteries comes first regardless.
